My Tall Drink of Water

Lately, I've had extra time on my hands and I developed an addiction to the soaps.
When I watch my stories, I'm not exactly watching, it's more like listening, except when this hunk-of-a-man is on the screen.
Talk about a tall drink of water. He reminds me of Mr. Darcy on Pride and Prejudice. swoon
He's my crush of the day, week, year, okay for a while.

Big Drink of Water

On this Earth Day 2010, it's cloudy, rainy,
and chilly in sunny San Diego.
Drink up earth because tomorrow
the sun is going to shine.

Celebrating Life

Last week, my dear friend Valerie, her family and all her blog friends, mourned and celebrated Granny's 96 years of life.
Btw, thank you for the condolences, though she wasn't my biological grandmother, I regarded her as my adopted-granny, as did the rest of Valerie's blog followers. She touched many lives in her own unique way.

While I prayed for Granny and hoped for a miracle, I guess you can say, life came full circle.
My dear friend, Erika experienced her own little miracle last week. She was blessed with a 7 lb. bundle of joy named Tomas. And, let me tell you, he is truly a blessing and has many relatives and friends waiting to spoil him rotten.

While baby Tomas is settling into his new life, I decided to knit a special blanket for him.

Pattern: Kristen Patay's, Baby Cloth patterns
Yarn: Vanna's Choice baby yarn in Little Boy Blue and White
Needles: US size 9 (the pattern suggests a size 3, but the yarn is too thick for a small knitting needle.)

I'm hoping to finish the blanket within a month's time. I'm not ruling out any modifications to the patterns at this point, because I will definitely plan on adding a thick border to each square before seaming them together.

So, until next time friends, let's go out and celebrate life.

RIP Granny

Granny
October 24, 1913 - April 13, 2010

She worked on her precious quilts to the very last day.
Granny lived 96 years and what I find truly amazing is how in her last year on this earth, she touched so many people with her quilts;
they were made with love and care.
Her strong work ethic and belief in the Lord was shared with us through Valerie's blog and passed on as a lesson to us younguns.
I'll miss seeing pictures of Granny reading her bible, or reading the stories about her laundry schedule,
or how she had to get back to her sewing because she had work to do.
It would be selfish of me to want to keep her here for one more story. Granny is not in pain anymore, she's peacefully with the Lord.

I will cherish my quilt forever which I named, My Granny Prayer Quilt and it means more to me now than it did the first time I received it in August.

Cheers!

Congratulations to all readers on their 20th hour of the read-a-thon!
By now, most readers have called it a night, but I'm still up and cheering whoever is willing to put up with me on twitter #readathon.
Something tells me a few people, myself included, will be doing this very soon.

As I type my finally words for the evening or early morning, we have about 3 hours and 30 minutes to go. I'm not sure if I will be up until the end, but if you are or you're making an attempt, more power to you.

I tried to visit all the readers on Team Shelley and leave a few words of encouragement and good cheer. If I missed you, so sorry. I hope everyone reached their goal or did their personal best. All that matters is that you feel good about your accomplishment.

Go Team Shelley!!

Read-a-thon

After visiting Jen's blog this morning, I read that she's going to participate in the Dewey's 24 hour Read-a-thon. I've never heard of a Dewey read-a-thon, but it was worth looking into since Jen (a pretty smart cookie) had signed on.
At first I thought you had to read a book for 24 hours straight (I'm delusional), but soon found out everyone was divided into shifts. It sounded like something I'd like to give a try, but rather than reading a book, I thought I would be part of the pep rally. Cheerleaders needed? Where do I sign?

I am now an official Read-a-thon cheerleader.

Go Team Shelley!

Even though I don't have an assigned reading shift, I may pick up my book(s) and flip through a few pages. :-)
As of now I believe there are over 300 readers from the US, the UK and Australia, all coming together for one day and night to read for 24 hours as a way of showing unity in the world of literature.

The action starts at 5:00 am Pacific time on Saturday, April 10, 2010. There is still time to sign on if you would like to partake in this exciting event...just click on the links and it will lead you to the site.

Go Readers!

The Green Purple Connection

There has been some serious green and purple knitting going on around here.
On a sorta unrelated note, I recently found out my Walmart will no longer carry my favorite yarn, Vanna's Choice. I'm so disappointed. They are now carrying a new super bulky yarn by Lion Brand Hometown USA. The bright-colored yarn lured me in. I bought only one skein, but later went back for one more to finish my scarf. The verdict; It's easy to work with but pills (not sure if that is the correct word for it??) like crazy.

Now onto my FO's:

I made this green scarf on St. Patrick's Day. Did I wear it? Nah... I just had a need to celebrate the occasion by knitting something green.

Next up...

...a vibrant purple foliage hat for moi.
Once upon a time, this hat was the Meret beret, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Now, I'd like to share the Passion Flowers Scarf in Sweet Pea Green. An extra little something for my dear friend Valerie. I'm posting the picture today because I'm assuming she received it by now. If not, ut oh. Oh well, surprise Valerie!!

Lastly, it's the Drifted Pearls Scarf.

When I featured this scarf several posts ago, I wasn't too happy with the exposed ribbing on the back of the loop, so I decided to reknit the loop and added an extra bobble repeat. Much better.

Unfortunately, it's warming up in Valerie's town and she may have to wait for next winter to wear her knitted scarves.
Unlike here, the rain was pouring down a few minutes ago.
Sunshine, rain, earthquakes, and tsunami alerts (we had one a couple of months ago), nothing but goodlivin' in California.

I hope everyone had a great Monday. :-)

Earthquake in California

I love earthquakes! Just ask my friend in Chicago who I like to remind quite frequently. I'll take an earthquake over a tornado, blizzard, tsunami, or hurricane.
It's just a fact you have to come to accept living in California (learn to love them and live with them)... but this afternoon, I thought the big one hit.

Major earthquake in San Diego - 6.9!! *upgraded to a 7.2 Aftershocks are coming.

Wow, we were rockin' and rollin' people! Scary stuff.
The medicine cabinet door flew open and the ground felt like someone was running a rolling pin under my feet. :-(

Who pissed off Mother Nature??

I hope everyone is safe and not too shaken up!

ah, Happy Easter.

Spring Break 2010 - lots 'o pics

If I were a college student, Spring Break would be a big deal, but since I'm not, it just means I get to watch my soaps after lunch...still a big deal but for a different age bracket.
This year, my Road Trip Buddy asked if I wanted to join her on an excursion to the Richard Nixon Museum, I said, "Um, okay." I'm always up for an adventure.

I took a lot of pictures. Flash photography was not permitted indoors, not sure why, but I followed the rules and changed the camera settings.
Here is my roadtrip in pictures.

Of course, our trip began with the obligatory Starbucks stop. Love my Starbucks!

Our sky in San Diego looked like this - blue sky with patchy clouds. Beautiful!

We arrived in Yorba Linda to this - overcast and chilly.

The museum was beautiful inside and had very shiny floors.

They had a lovely garden outside, which included the gazebo used for Tricia Nixon's wedding at the White House in 1971.

These two dudes were chillin' out by the garden pool/duck pond.

I came across another hallway (with very shiny floors), lined with flags representing our fifty states.

At the end of this long hallway I found a doorway...

...it led me into this beautiful ballroom. It reminded me of the movie Pride and Prejudice; the scene where Georgina was playing the piano for her brother, Mr Darcy... and then, I started to twirl. Don't worry no one was around and my friend knows this about me, it's what I do. :-)

This is what I believed made the room special, three elegant chandeliers. I could only get two in the frame, but they were beautiful.

The museum was filled with so many interesting artifacts and information about President Nixon's life and what he dealt with during his years while in the White House - before, during and after. There is something about Nixon that I really liked. He was a good man and worked hard. I was too young to comprehend his errors during Watergate, but in comparison to the present politicians in office and what they have done and do, his scandal is almost small-time.

My friend was impressed with The Kennedy Presidential Library she visited a few years ago and was curious to visit this one. Though the JFK library had three levels, the Nixon library with its single level, had a very nice theatre.
Next stop on the list, the Ronald Reagan Library. All aboard.

Finally, I leave you with a picture of an astronaut suit, I believe was worn by Buzz Aldrin.

Since our beloved Buzz Aldrin is on Dancing with the Stars this season and made it to the next round, I thought I would pay homage to the space guy by sharing a picture of his space suit.

After our museum visit, we hopped on over to South Coast Plaza Mall in the OC.
Let me just say, I felt underdressed and I needed a bigger budget to shop at this mall.
We were on a mission to find a pair of comfortable shoes, but since I'm not into 5 inch heels, the mission was not accomplished - People watching was the way to go.
Maybe in another world or more like another lifetime, I'll be able to afford Versace, Armani, D&G, and Pucci, but for now I'm happy with my Starbucks, thank you very much.

Happy Friday.
