...a fellow knitter.
Kirsten at Through the Loops is trying to raise $5000 for Alzheimer's & Dementia Foundation and so far she has $4939 and counting!! The money raised will help out families with loved ones suffering from this disease.
It all began, one day, with a beautiful knitted vest meant for her father, Dr. G.
In short...Dr. G was suffering from alzheimers and passed away in September, but his memory lives on with everyone lucky enough to have known him. Tomorrow he would have been 80 years old and the family will be celebrating his amazing life. He contributed so much to this world, but in an attempt to keep this post short you can read the touching story about Dr. G at, throughtheloops.com
Yesterday, Kirsten offered her personal pattern for lavalette, a beautiful knitted shawl she designed herself, as a gift if a donation was made to this worthy cause she so strongly believes in.
This is an excerpt from her post...

The Solution As you may know from my efforts with Dr. G's Memory Vest, raising money for Alzheimer's and dementia research is a cause I really believe in. I am very proud of the amount we have raised so far - a little over $4000. My father would have been 80 years old on July 22 and I would very much like to hit $5000 by that date.
I will offer Lavalette for free but would like to suggest that you make a voluntary donation to Alzheimer's and dementia research. You can make your donation by clicking the "donate" button over there at the top of the left side bar. The download link is at the bottom of this post, no need to email me to get the pattern. If you make a donation and want Dr. G's too you'll need to send me an email - go to the Dr. G's Memory Vest post for details.

If you feel inclined to donate to this wonderful cause and receive a great pattern in return, please take a moment to give. Click here. :o)
*All donations will go to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer Foundation.
Thank you :-)

This sounds like a great cause! My sorority's philanthropy is Alzheimer's (Sigma Kappa) so it is very close to my heart.
P.S. Thanks for your comment about the chinese spam thing going on. I was hit again last night with 300, but since i switched to comment moderation was able to easily reject each comment.
Thank you Martha!
